Maher Zain is a Lebanese/Swedish singer whose heartfelt songs resonate radiantly.

Born in Tripoli, Lebanon in 1981, Sweden became his second home in 1989 when his family left their homeland to start a new life in Europe. Around the age of 16, while at school, he discovered music technology, and became interested in music production. When he reached adulthood, aeronautical engineering became his career choice, and he studied at university, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in A.E.

Maher still felt a passion with music, he rapped, and hung out with friends who were rappers, and Dj’s. At that time, he felt more comfortable rapping more than singing. One day in Sweden, while on an R&B cruise ship, there was a karaoke competition, and Maher took the courage to sing. From that moment he gained more confidence in singing due to the feedback he received, and singing & song-writing took over.

After some time, Maher linked with a Moroccan producer who was living in Sweden at the time, his name was “Red One,” who later became a famous music producer in the States. Maher decided to go to New York to reside, a good place to be for music. While in New York, he linked with Red One, and together they created some tracks.

After being in America for a while, he went back to Sweden for a short time to visit family, and ended up staying longing then he intended, he stayed for nearly a year. While there, he connected with people from the Muslim community, and began evolving more closer to his religion. Maher felt a yearning to write lyrics relating to Islam, and life as a Muslim, it was a natural desire, he wanted to inspire and uplift people with his music.

In 2009, the singer, song-writer signed with record label, “Awakening Records,”in the UK.  He then went on to record his debut album ‘Thank you Allah. Since then Maher has recorded albums, “Forgive me, One, and The Best of Maher Zain,”) He has also recorded an abundance of songs which have captivated people, both Muslim and non-Muslim in many countries around the world.

The first time I heard Maher Zain?

The Covid pandemic was a shocking time, ending the lives of thousands of people around the world. Many elders who had the disease, lay alone in hospital not being able to share their last moments with their families. It was also an excruciating time for hospital staff. Governments in various countries-imposed lockdowns which continued on & off.

A frightful time in history, people globally felt the fear of, “If I catch it, will I survive, and, when will this pandemic end?” Worry was high for many, and I too went through a time of feeling low.

As I sat home alone on a particular evening, I opened YouTube and the algorithm popped up a singer who had performed a candid, live recorded event. I’d never heard the person before and decided to listen.

The title is “The best of Maher Zain – live & acoustic, full album. Straight away, his rich tone of voice and music resonated with me. His Songs were a combination of Arabic, and English, a nice balance, I don’t know Arabic, but that is no concern to me, as music is about feeling. All the musicians who performed with Maher were very good, and so entwined together their musical gifts flourished. I felt Maher’s genuine aura, as a singer-songwriter. As the words of the song, “One Day,” came on, tears began to flow from my eyes.

(“Lying here wide awake on my own now, silence is the loudest cry, I’m safe but I’ve lost everything I’ve known, I can smile, because the pain is gone, but cry because its where I’m from, O God, I turn to you to make me strong again.”)

The lyrics touched me, many nice songs were played, the event felt like a nice musical journey. I received energy from watching Maher & his band. This particular live-recorded event took me on an emotional journey.

“The best of Maher Zain – live & acoustic, full album.”
