Baye Mahanta Diop holds his place among Senegal’s finest musicians.
A professional guitarist, producer & arranger, who has toured worldwide as a lead guitarist and has collaborated with numerous World Artists. His speciality is rich in Jazz, Blues and World Music. He can also rise to the occasion, in any genre with enchanting melodies, licks, riffs & runs.
Baye’s musical journey began in Fatick Senegal. His father held the position of Director of Health & Social Services at a local hospital. During Baye’s childhood, he would travel with his father, to his workplace, and spend time, sitting in the courtyard tapping out various rhythms. Staff and patients would smile, delighted at seeing the youngster immersing himself in rhythm.
At the age of twelve, he was charmed by the sound of the guitar and gathered pieces of wood with the intention of crafting a guitar. After successfully completion of his task, he would often trail down to the river bank, sit by a tree, and practice for hours with his newly assembled instrument. As the years passed by, Baye’s guitar technique advanced extensively.
Energized by musical giants such as “Orchestra Baobab, Ali Farka Toure, Hendrix, and Wes Montgomery.” His musical inspirations assisted him in exploring an array of different styles and techniques. This led to him creating a dynamically rich eclectic style.
Diop’s professional entry into the world of music began in the 90s, partaking in a vast number of events, he became a member of the “Royal Band de Thiès,” and “the Orchestral Regional de Kaolack.” Both bands received distinguished Senegalese Awards. Around the same time, the Musician travelled to The Gambia to perform in various international Hotels.
In 2010, Senegal held an inauguration for the newly constructed African Renaissance statue, the tallest statue in Africa. The event was also a celebration of 50 years of the country’s independence. Baye took his place amongst some of Africa’s finest artists such as “Papa Wemba, Manu Dibango & Idrissa Diop,” performing in front of then-President Abdoulaye Wade and 19 heads of State.
Over the years, Baye has collaborated with a vast collection of notable artists such as Yoro Ndiaye, Flavia Coelho, Thandiswa Mazwai, Angelique Kidjo, Pape Diouf, Souleyman Faye, Oriazul, Justino Delgado, Diabel Cissokho, Edmond Scali, and classical singer Dawn Padmore. He was also lead Guitarist for Senegal’s renowned Baye Fall/Singer “Cheikh Lo,” and toured worldwide with the artist for nine years.
A guitarist, who can jump into any genre, his style is truly amazing. Baye Diop stands tall as one of Senegal’s musical global storytellers.
